2026 Update: New Federal Side-Impact Test for Car Seats

A major change to U.S. car seat rules is close. NHTSA’s new side-impact standard, FMVSS 213a, will require car seats for children up to 40 pounds to pass a crash test that simulates a vehicle being struck from the side. The original compliance date of June 30, 2025, was pushed back. Seats manufactured from early December 2026 must comply. To check whether a newer seat meets the standard, look for a side-impact or FMVSS 213a label, or check the manufacture date.

Parents do not need to replace a seat they already own. Seats made before the deadline are not being recalled. They remain safe to use if they are installed correctly, are not past their expiration date and still fit your child’s height and weight. The American Academy of Pediatrics continues to recommend keeping children rear-facing for as long as possible, until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by their seat. That is often well past age 2 with convertible seats like those listed above.
